I didn’t say anything when JuanGa passed away; there was enough people talking about it either way (Even Obama tweeted!)… But, when I heard the idea about doing a tribute in his honor, I thought that was the perfect way for me to contribute and express what we as Mexicans and music lovers feel about it/his passing 😦 So, this September the 30th we’re doing a Tribute to JuanGa and I just wanted to invite you guys to enjoy one of the best Mexican gifts to the world, Juan Gabriel’s music (or as I call him for reference, the Mexican Elton John haha).
If you’re thinking about the awesome people you know and want to support, why don’t you go to Austin Chronicle‘s best of and vote?! Here are some of my picks/Awesome friends: Ivete Lucas-Film maker, Gerardo Arellano-Visual Artist, Federico Archuleta-Mural Art, Gabriel Santiago-Musician, Mobley-Band, Xavier Treviño-Pastry Chef, Juan Alfredo Rios#ChidoMachine-DJ, JoyasPio-Jeweler, Limbo Jewelry– Jeweler, Cat Presley/@Chuck Edwards salon-Salon, Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt-Hotel, Blanton Museum-Museum #THEPROJECTO-Wild Card
This last Saturday the 21st I had the pleasure of witnessing my good friend and awesome Artist Gerardo Arellano receive the “Emerging Artist” award at the Mexican American Cultural Center‘s Awards of Excellence here in Austin, Tx.
Ever since I had the pleasure to meet this amazing artist, I’ve been blessed to witness how he’s grown and kick ass repeatedly with/without help and at times with a bunch of obstacles. He has persevered and is now very active and well known not only as a painter, but as a musician, PR machine, Dance Lord and basically a local celebrity!
Who would have thought that the friend of my friend that was basically my first contact here in Austin Tx ended up to be one of my favorite artists a great contact and one of my rocks here in the States. I feel very lucky to be your friend and to have crazy awesome pieces of your art!
Check his amazing work at his website or Instagram! He’s constantly working all over town so I’m sure you’ll recognize it whenever you’re wondering around; if you’re lucky you can even catch him dancing or playing the accordion on the East Side!.
Cheers Gerardo, keep’em coming, you very well deserve this and much much more 😀
It just started and I’m already kind of tired, but the excitement is bigger so lets get ready to RRRRRumbleeee!
Hope you have a great time! I’ll be posting on twitter if you want to follow me to see pics & stuff 🙂
Can’t wait for Los Tetas, CocoRosie,YACHT, Mobley, HUMANS and Pee-wee’s Big Holiday YAYYY!
Anyway, best of luck, if you have suggestions please let me know, I’d love to discover new stuff and take advantage of the best festival ever (at least in my opinion 😉 ).
Because this was an almost forced visit (by myself, but still), I took my time to get there and was basically dragging my feet all the way, so I got there at approximately 3:30 PM (1 1/2 hrs before closing), My God, was that a mistake!
I have to say, my only references for the museum were conversations and “Ferris Bueller’s day off” haha, so I knew I was going to see some amazing pieces, but very traditional, and since I’ve been to the Louvre, d’Orsay, and museums of what I thought were the same style, I didn’t expected anything new. Which lead to this post; How come something that makes my life happier and fuller, can make me so jaded and obnoxious at times?! Is it the “hipster” mode or basically my generation’s attitude at the world? Why is my automatic rolling eyes get in the way of my passion? I dunno but frankly, it sucks sometimes.
The way back I was in the clouds, it was slightly drizzling, a perfect weather for a nice walk, all of my senses were awake and I was happily walking back home, disregarding that Google Maps is a Troll and made me walk in circles for like 30+ Minutes!!!! HA! yes, it happened, it made me laugh a lot when I noticed it, but I got to see the Bean again and Jaume Plensa’s “1004 Portraits” at the Millenium Park, so not everything was lost.
Anyway, hope you get a chance to go to the Museum, even when you think you saw it all, there is always something new and fun, or a different perspective that can change the way you enjoy things. Its worth the time, I swear!
Peace out Chavos!
