Coka Treviño

Founder & Director

Coka Treviño is a curator and arts leader with over 20 years of experience fostering cultural engagement, supporting artists, and strengthening connections between creative communities and institutions.

Her work is rooted in a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; ensuring that exhibitions, programs, and collaborations reflect and elevate underrepresented voices. As Curator and Artistic Director at Big Medium, she shaped the organization’s curatorial vision, directed the Texas Biennial, and expanded opportunities for Texas artists through partnerships with international platforms like ZONA MACO and UNTITLED Art Fair.

With a career spanning museums, public art initiatives, and cross-disciplinary projects, she has curated events for the Blanton Museum, exhibitions for the Mexican American Cultural Center, and the SXSW Art Program, while also consulting on the development of the Thinkery Museum’s Artist in Residence program to prioritize accessibility, and amplifying outreach for ArtPrize in 2023. Earlier roles include exhibit coordination for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey and curating for the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León art collection.

Beyond visual arts, her curatorial practice extends into music and public programs. She co-curated a concert with the Austin Symphony, introducing works by women of color composers into their repertoire, and co-produced Translating Community History, an award-winning archival project documenting Black and Latinx narratives in Austin. She also co-curated Golden Hornet’s MXTX, a bi national music initiative fostering cultural exchange between the US and Mexico.

Today, Treviño leverages her expertise through independent curation and advisory work, collaborating with both public and private sector clients to develop culturally resonant art strategies, collections, and programs. Whether working with institutions, collectors, or community-driven initiatives, her approach remains anchored in artist advocacy, equitable practices, and meaningful storytelling.

Through exhibitions, publications, and collaborative projects, Treviño’s work consistently centers artists, community narratives, and dialogue—bridging art spaces with the audiences they serve.
