Tangibly Longing

by Consuelo Walker

The Projecto Gallery on view November 7 - December 14, 2024

Consuelo Walker's work explores the tension between physical presence and absence through light, movement, and memory. Her installations examine the paradox of touch in a world increasingly dominated by virtual interaction, questioning the fragility of human connection. Using everyday materials like sewing and embroidery, she reconfigures domestic symbolism, linking personal and collective memories. In this exhibition, the tactile is evoked but remains inaccessible, reflecting modern disconnection. Subtle movements in her pieces add sensory depth, highlighting time and change as key elements in human perception. Walker's art invites reflection on our need for connection amidst growing physical and emotional distance.

"My work draws inspiration from the concept of home and the everyday practices that shape it. Needlework, embroidery, and similar crafts are often tied to the feminine world, and I am intrigued by the manipulation of the simple objects used in these techniques. These tools, with their nostalgic charm, evoke memories of household routines, familiar to many. When accumulated and transformed through repetition and excess, these traditional materials take on new meanings. The focus shifts away from their original function, toward the way they are reinterpreted and reintroduced into the everyday. I intend to provoke diverse interpretations—both visual and sensory—through the eyes of the viewer, inviting them to reconsider the ordinary in unexpected ways."
